Nostalgia Reloaded – The Pinafore Dress

My Closet Diary - The Pinafore Dress

Hey Belles!

As the sun scorches harder day by day, my thirst to buy comfortable summer outfit is increasing with the rise in temperature outside. Do you remember my last post about dungarees? Since the time, I started using them again this year, I have become really nostalgic. I was lost in my childhood memories and I was trying to remember the different outfits, I used to wear during summer.

Pinafore or a Pinafore Dress?

One of the vivid memory is of a pinafore dress. Don’t confuse it with the pinafore. While pinafore is an apron, pinafore dress is sleeveless, collarless dress worn over different styles of tops or tees. It almost looks like a dungaree skirt. The difference between a dungaree skirt and pinafore dress is that a pinafore dress is made of lightweight material whereas dungaree skirts are made up of mostly denim.

My earliest memory of a Pinafore Dress

As a child, I had very little access to branded stuff or outfits of latest trends. My dad used to travel to different cities for business meetings and we used to give him a long list to shop for us. And that’s when he used to shop for us and he used to stock my wardrobe with barbie dolls, outfits and shoes.

The second source for me was when I used to go for a vacation with family and shop crazily in different cities we were visiting. The third source for fashionable outfits was my favourite – my grandmother’s hand-stitched outfits. She is one gem of a person and has immense knowledge about fabrics and her stitching skill is awesome.I have grown up wearing her hand stitched outfits. She did not undergo any fashion designing course, still, no one could beat her sewing skills in the town. She used to take a look at an outfit and create a carbon copy or sometimes even better outfits which used to leave us pleasantly surprised!

When those dungarees were trending in the 90s, I was obsessed with them and wanted to have more and more of those. Unable to access any outlet to shop for the latest fashion trends in my town, I turned to my grandmother. And did she stitch such a lovely dress in simple cotton fabric, which I prized for years to come! (Of course, till I outgrew them. I was a tall kid).  How I wish that mobile phone cameras would have been so common earlier and I had a picture in it to cherish. Then I was unaware that the dress I was assuming as dungaree skirt is actually known as pinafore dress. Silly me!

Pinafore Dresses Today

I have relished my pinafore dress then and I simply love the current avatar as well. What else can be so versatile and classic at the same time.? This dress is a must-have in every girl’s closet. The options for styling a pinafore dress are endless. Last week, I decided to wear my midi pinafore dress with a tank top. I threw my white sneakers to add the summery, feminine vibe that this look emits. I am already planning to wear this dress over a sweater with boots this winter.

Pinafore dresses are so cute, fashionable and in vogue these days. I selected this particular pinafore dress as I love floral outfits but don’t like feeling too sweet and pretty in them. If you are someone like me this outfit is perfect for a day outing, brunch, movies etc.
